Key Elements of Focus on Business

A conference program featuring high profile international, national and regional business and government leaders. Building on the 2006 theme, partnerships for growth, thought-provoking presentations on leading-edge business partnering techniques, shared experiences of business success, as well as sessions on innovation and emerging industries will be features of the 2006 program. Conference streams at the 2006 event will include the defence industry, homeland security, life sciences, sports science, agri-business, innovation, venture capital, innovation, technology and exporting.

Internationally recognised business speakers. Previous international guest speakers include business gurus Ricardo Semler, Geoffrey Colvin, Editorial Director of New York-based Fortune Magazine, Rohit Shukla, finalist in the 2004 Ernst & Young US Entrepreneur of the Year and President and CEO of the leading US innovation think-tank, Larta and Greg Horowitt, Director of Global Connect - an international facilitator of venture capital and research for the IT industry. International guest speakers for the 2006 event are being targeted from the UK, Canada and the US.

Niche-market 'champagne showcases' of regional businesses representing the key industry sectors identified above. In 2006 the traditional Focus on Business exhibition will be replaced with several small showcases, mini exhibitions and demonstrations which will be small in size and highly targeted in terms of participants and guests. At this stage it is proposed that ‘champagne showcases’ will be held in particular in the sectors of: Homeland Security targeting international and local guests from the diplomatic corps, government agencies and Austrade; Technology and Innovation targeting guests from venture capitalists, international partners, potential investors and Austrade representatives; and Research focussing particularly on commercialisation and demonstration of key research at the Australian National University.

A gourmet farmers' market which will showcase regional exports in the food and wine industry to international food and beverage buyers, national and international visiting journalists and a range of international based Austrade representatives.

A conference dinner at Parliament House, which is traditionally addressed by the Prime Minister. This event is attended by in excess of 600 regional and national business leaders. In 2004 the business keynote address was presented by Mr Roger Corbett, CEO Woolworths. A prominent national business leader will again address the event in 2006.

International business delegations will be encouraged to coincide their visit to Canberra with the Focus on Business conference. Invitations have been extended to advanced technology, research, government and venture capitalists from Ireland, UK, Canada, USA, Singapore and Hong Kong to attend the event. In the area of agri-business, journalists and food and beverage buyers from major Asian hotel chains will be invited as guests of the event. Austrade has also commenced planning to attract regional representatives and buyers in the sectors of defence, technology, government administration and agribusiness.

A VIP program is a key feature of the event, involving a targeted group of senior national and international business executives - CEO’s and MD’s representing relevant corporations. The VIP program includes high level corporate hosting activities and private briefing sessions with senior federal ministers for invited corporate VIPs. These sessions are rated as one of the event’s key successes where small group sessions are led by the Treasurer and other senior Cabinet Ministers. More than 80 senior national business leaders participate each year in this program. In 2006 plans are underway to further enhance this program for VIPs, sponsors and key local businesses to ensure high-level participation at the event by individuals and organisation who can contribute to the Australian Capital Region’s business success.

Participation in each Focus on Business event has exceed 1000 delegates, including senior representatives from national and international firms; regional and local businesses; ACT, NSW and Federal Government departments and members of the diplomatic corps.
